“1989”, Lian Yang, 1989

Lian Yang writes the poem “1989,” dedicated to the tragic events of Tiananmen Square.

The Chinese poets Yang Lian and Gu Cheng, along with their families in Auckland, protest against the violent suppression of the protests in China on June 4, 1989. The Chinese character they are holding up means “offering to the dead.”
